I remember having a beautiful call with a young patient last year. She had stage 4 cancer. She said many (if not all) people around her had lost hope, including her doctors.

She said, “I don’t know what will happen to me, Luke. But hope is everything. Even if someone gives me or makes me believe in a little hope or a miracle, I know it will keep me going.

No one knows what will happen to us, but who are we to take away hope from anyone? We are not in control. I don’t want false promises, either. I just want hope. Is that too much for people to give?”

I remember telling her, “No one is God to decide when to give up, lose hope, or announce a death sentence. Miracles happen around us all the time, and then there is destiny. We are not in control of that, but that doesn’t mean we don’t believe and have faith in possible miracles. Hope is a powerful drug. Our fears and insecurities should never stop us or make us stop others from believing.”

Hope is everything.

It also reminds me of a beautiful woman I met just the other day. Eight relapses over eight years with cancer, 70 chemo cycles, a loving husband and family, a great team of doctors, lifestyle, and prayer. She refuses to give up. She has been my sense of hope, love, and attitude. We have to keep moving forward. Her besuited hair is natural, too. Somewhere deep within, I believe her body learned to live with cancer. Never give up.

Whether you have just been diagnosed or are going through a long battle with cancer, there’s always hope as long as you hold onto it. Can we all take a moment to send love and prayers to anyone going through this journey, no matter what part of the globe they are in?
