Lemon Water, Warm, On An Empty Stomach?
Is it a myth or a healthy practice? Let’s explore.
My earliest clients, 14 years ago, know me for this: lemon water, warm, on an empty stomach. It was one of the simplest yet most powerful health tips I shared during my early talks and seminars. Fast forward to today, social media has twisted its benefits, creating unnecessary drama and confusion for likes and views. Many blindly followed the noise, forgetting to check the science.
But let me tell you this: I still drink warm water with lemon every morning whenever I can. It’s a ritual I believe in, not for the hype but for the science and benefits it offers.
Let’s cut through the noise and look at the research-backed benefits of this simple concoction.
Science-Backed Benefits of Warm Lemon Water
1. Aids Digestion
Warm water helps break down food for smoother digestion, and lemons, rich in citric acid, stimulate bile production, aiding fat digestion and gut health.
🔍 Research Insight: A study published in the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (2020) discusses how citric acid positively influences bile flow and digestive enzyme activity. Source: PubMed.
2. Boosts Immune Function
Lemons are a rich source of vitamin C, a potent antioxidant that supports the immune system. Vitamin C enhances the production of white blood cells, which are essential for fighting infections.
🔍 Research Insight: A review in the Journal of Clinical Medicine (2017) highlights the role of vitamin C in reducing the duration and severity of respiratory infections. Source: NCBI.
3. Promotes Hydration
After several hours of sleep, the body is naturally dehydrated. Starting your day with warm lemon water replenishes lost fluids and supports optimal cellular function.
🔍 Research Insight: A study in Frontiers in Physiology (2018) emphasizes the benefits of hydration on physical and cognitive performance. Source: NIH.
4. Enhances Skin Health
Lemon’s antioxidants, particularly vitamin C, combat free radical damage and boost collagen synthesis, promoting healthier, glowing skin.
🔍 Research Insight: A paper in Nutrients (2017) shows how vitamin C supplementation improves skin elasticity and reduces oxidative stress. Source: PubMed.
5. Aids in Weight Management
- Drinking warm water with lemon may assist those looking to manage their weight.
- The combination of hydration and citric acid can support metabolism and curb cravings, making warm lemon water a great addition for weight management.
🔍 Research Insight: Research published in the Journal of Nutrition suggests that beverages that contain higher amounts of citric acid and hydration can enhance metabolic rate, regulate appetite, and influence weight control (Murad et al., 2019) Source: NCBI.
These properties make warm water with lemon an appealing addition to morning routines. For many, simply starting the day with a refreshing drink can set a positive tone for healthier choices throughout the day.
But Is It for Everyone?
While the benefits are numerous, warm water with lemon may not suit everyone. Here’s what you should know:
1. Acid Reflux (GERD)
- For some, acidic beverages like lemon water can exacerbate reflux symptoms.
- Interestingly, everyone is different. We have GERD patients who have reported relief from drinking warm lemon water.
🔍 Research Insight: An analysis in Gastroenterology Research and Practice (2012) shows that acidic foods affect GERD patients differently. Source: NCBI.
2. Dental Sensitivity
Excessive consumption of acidic drinks like lemon water can erode dental enamel.
Use a straw and rinse your mouth with plain water afterward to mitigate this risk.
🔍 Research Insight: A study in Clinical Oral Investigations (2015) outlines how acidic drinks can lead to enamel erosion with prolonged use. Source: PubMed.
3. Allergic Reactions
Citrus allergies are rare but possible. Symptoms like itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing warrant medical attention. If you are allergic to citrus, avoid this. Make an informed decision, always.
4. Arthritis or Joint Pain
Some believe acidic foods like lemon water exacerbate joint pain, but in our experience, it may suit some. Lemons’ anti-inflammatory properties can be beneficial for many with arthritis. Respect bio-individuality when making decisions. If it doesn’t suit you don’t have it
🔍 Research Insight: A study in Arthritis Research & Therapy (2018) highlights the role of antioxidants like vitamin C in reducing inflammation in arthritis. Source: PubMed.
Make It Your Own: Build on the Basics
Lemons and limes are higher anti-inflammatory and rich in antioxidants making them great for your skin , immune system and gut. The beauty of warm lemon water lies in its versatility. You can enhance it based on your health goal. I like to add ginger, turmeric, and black pepper to mine.
Remember to use a base of simple warm water with lemon. And then you can add a pinch of:
- Ginger: Anti-inflammatory and gut-soothing.
- Turmeric and Black Pepper: For reducing systemic inflammation.
- Cinnamon: Helps with blood sugar regulation.
- Raw honey: Adds natural sweetness and antimicrobial benefits.
Wherever you are in the world, this simple habit can be a mindful way to start your day.
Personal Note
If it suits you, keep it. If it doesn’t, move on—no drama necessary. Everyone is different, and the key is to respect what works for your body.
I still turn to this drink whenever I can. It’s not just about health benefits—it’s about beginning the day with intention and simplicity.

My dad strongly believes in hot water lemon first thing in the morning but I could never digest the sourness of itz Someone then told me to freeze a lemon/lime and grate its zest in hot water and drink that first thing in the morning. I have no idea if I’m benefitting from it and can’t find much research online so I’m curious if you’ve researched the benefits of lemon zest in warm water and what are your thoughts? Thanks!
I had had lemon water and honey first thing in the morning for 25 years. Had radiant skin, good digestion, and solid energy.
