Loving-kindness meditation (Mettā meditation) works on the principle that the energy we emit influences not just ourselves but also those we direct it toward. Mettā meditation has been a deeply transformative practice in my life. I follow a flexible approach, meditating some days in the morning and at night, while on others, I let my mind and body guide me.

Many of my patients have also experienced significant benefits from Mettā meditation. One client reported significant improvements in gut health, better nutrient absorption, and relief from digestive issues after incorporating it into their routine. Another found that regular practice helped manage stress and improve sleep quality, leading to a more balanced and resilient lifestyle.

How to Practice Mettā Meditation?

1. Prepare Your Space and Mind

  • Sit in a comfortable position with your back straight. If sitting is not possible, lying down is fine too.
  • Relax your shoulders, forehead, and eyes. Take five–six deep breaths to center yourself.

2. Start with Yourself

Begin by warming your heart. Think of a moment, person, or experience that brings you joy. Let this thought fill your heart with warmth and gratitude.

Now, repeat the following affirmations for yourself:

  • May I be happy.
  • May I be healthy.
  • May I be abundant.
  • May I be safe.
  • May I be loved.

Say these words with intention and from the depth of your heart.

3. Extend Kindness to Loved Ones

Visualize someone you deeply care about—your partner, child, friend, or parent. Imagine them in front of you and offer the same affirmations:

  • May you be happy.
  • May you be healthy.
  • May you be abundant.
  • May you be safe.
  • May you be loved.

Repeat this for one or two loved ones.

4. Include Difficult Relationships

Now, bring to mind someone you’re struggling with—a colleague, family member, or someone who has hurt you. This step may feel uncomfortable, but it’s also the most transformative. Offer them the same affirmations, even if it feels challenging.

If resistance arises, acknowledge it, but gently guide yourself back to the practice. You’re not condoning their behavior; you’re simply freeing yourself from the negative energy tied to them.

5. Expand to All Beings

Finally, extend these affirmations to everyone, everywhere:

  • May everyone be happy.
  • May everyone be healthy.
  • May everyone be abundant.
  • May everyone be safe.
  • May everyone be loved.

Choosing to step away from such influences allows you to maintain emotional balance and continue nurturing your well-being.
  3. Practice Daily Gratitude: Gratitude is one of the highest vibrational states. Reflecting on things you’re grateful for can instantly shift your energy and bring more positivity into your relationships.
  4. Be Mindful of Energy Drains: Pay attention to people or situations that leave you feeling emotionally drained. While it’s not always possible to avoid them, practicing Mettā meditation can help you manage their impact on your well-being.
